Spooky, Not Terrifying: How to Have a Pet-Safe Halloween

Halloween is here! Follow a few simple ASPCA-recommended precautions to make sure your pets stay out of harm's way this holiday. Because being scared is only a good time when it's fun and games—not when a beloved pet is sick or lost.

Put Treats Someplace Safe

Your pets can sniff them out if they’re tucked under a child’s bed or in some other out-of-sight but easy-to-access spot. Chocolate is dangerous for cats and dogs, and sugar-free candy containing xylitol is toxic.

Keep Pets Safely Away from the Door

Open doors are a flight opportunity (especially for anxious pets) when you’re receiving trick or treaters or party guests. Put your pets in a room with a closed door until the festivities are over.

Watch Out for Open Flames

If your pumpkin still has an open flame, take extra precaution with pets, who make bump it over or investigate and start a fire. Never leave your pumpkin and pets unattended.

Take Care with Costumes

Only dress your pet if you know it’s not a source of stress. And be mindful that costumes tend to have elements that invite chewing or choking—some are toxic. Keep your eye on your pets when around them in costume and put your costume safely away when you’re not wearing it.

Make Sure Your Pet Can Be Seen and IDed

Put a reflective collar on your pet in case they bolt—even more important if they are headed out with you. And make sure proper ID is attached. As a reminder, microchipping is a permanent way to make sure your pet can be IDed.
