Lick Mats are the perfect way to keep your active or anxious pup mentally engaged, which helps burn excess energy. The Lick Mat’s nooks and crannies force your dog to work for the tasty treat you’ve provided. Freezing the Lick Mat before you give it to your dog keeps them occupied even longer. Plus, Lick Mats are a great way to supplement the nutrients in your dog’s diet.
To occupy your pet longer, or give them a cool treat when it’s hot out, you can freeze the Lick Mat prior to use.
Please check that the treats and spreads you choose have no ingredients that are harmful to pets, like xylitol (sweetener) or grapes. If you are uncertain, ask your vet. It's best to start with foods you know your dog likes and introduce new treats in small amounts.
Clean mat after each use.
Here's a go-to simple recipe I use:
Peanut Butter and Jelly Freeze
- peanut butter
- fresh fruit
- plain yogurt
Spread a thin layer of peanut butter in the Lick Mat and top with your dog’s favorite smashed fruit and a couple of tablespoons of plain yogurt. I used blueberries and went with stripes instead of layers in this photo. Freeze. Let the toppings thaw slightly before serving to your dog. (I keep a bread bag on hand for freezing Lick Mats.)
Tip 1: I dilute my peanut butter with a little water, mixing until I get a whipped texture, to make it less rich (and less likely to cause an upset stomach).
Tip 2: I keep a old bread bag on hand for freezing Lick Mats. A large piece of fruit or vegetable works like a pizza saver and keeps the bag from freezing to the other toppings on your Lick Mat.
Tip 3: A little thawing is especially useful if you are using a Lick Mat for a dog with separation anxiety—the scent helps draw their attention to the mat and away from your absence.
